Miguel and I were remembering All in the Family and that brought up Sherman Hemsley.

I thought that Movin on Up related more to "The Jeffersons" than "All in the Family"

George Jefferson in general. although after I put it up, I saw that it could also relate to a certain presidential candidate who is "Movin' On Up" in the polls. Aren't you sorry now that you asked?

Yes. Hemsley was George and, of course, The Jeffs spun off from AitF. It is the first spinoff I remember. Was there an earlier one?

I'm convinced that the actually offensive reason to use it hasn't occurred to you yet, so you didn't intend it as such.

Conflating Obama with George because they've both moved up in the world.
