I assume that there are imperfections in the software/procedures for both candidates in taking in money and verifying it meets all laws. But I also assume that there's a messy backend for both campaigns that works to identify and return donations there weren't supposed to have. And I assume the FEC is keeping tabs on it all.

You're assumptions are flat wrong. Again, don't bother confusing yourself with the actual facts.
Fact?! You have no idea what goes on on the back end. You're making up the "fact" that there's no fix for flawed donations that come in the front end.
