District 9 OR Mmmmm, Cat Food

The older I get, the less I'm able to watch violence. This was unbearable for me.

Just got back from seeing it. Parts of it were tough to watch, but I thought it was very good. I loved that it was set in SA - a great touch.

Luckily, I don't eat shrimp or prawns. If I did, I wouldn't anymore.

SPOILER ALERT There was a plot problem, I thought. The aliens WANTED to leave; the South Africans wanted the aliens to leave. What was the fighting about? If the aliens had told the people, "We want to leave and we have a way to do it," then all the kerfluffle would have been unnecessary. (Of course, I don't like any of Shakespeare's misunderstanding-based plays either.)

Maybe the aliens thought the humans wouldn't have believed them. Maybe the aliens (rightfully) didn't trust the humans.

And, I'm not so sure the humans wanted them to really leave. Go to another more isolated part of SA, but not leave because of the weapon and genetic research.

Was the weapon supposed to be better than human weapons? I missed that. (Hard to catch everything when your eyes are closed through 75% of the movie.) Then that would make some sense, though I still think that most people would have thought it was a better bargain to get them to leave. Would be a MUCH shorter movie.

Yes, the alien weapons were super kick ass. That is why the Nigerian gang boss wanted his arm - he wanted to grow one like that so he could be the most powerful person on Earth.

I see. I completely misunderstood. I thought the appeal of the alien weapons was that they were essentially free because they could just take them from the aliens.

The alien weapons would not work for humans - they were biological based. That is why they wanted to capture, not kill, the lead guy. His DNA was altered enough so they weapons would work for him.

No, no, I knew that part about needing the DNA. (Goodness, I wasn't sleeping -- just has my eyes closed.) But I thought the big deal about the alien weapons was that they were essentially free for the taking, a giant stash of weaponry, if only you had the DNA to use them.
