The first 400 names in the Boston phonebook

WFB famously said something to the effect of, "I'd rather be governed by the first 400 persons in the Boston phonebook than the faculty at Harvard."

I never really bought into that sentiment being the elitist that I am...until the last 10 days and all the nonsense with the bailout.

I'm starting to think that is what tonight's debate is about.

That's so funny because I was just thinking this morning about how the times demand supremely deep knowledge of so much material that there's no longer any appeal to average joe politicians. i want subject matter competency tests for all elected offices.

Don't you hate it when your true instincts are brought to the fore...

My gut instinct is the same as Steph's. It seems so obvious that we'd want the most knowledgable to govern.

The problem as I see it is that no one can qualify. It is like the argument for capitalism. With trillions of transactions happening daily, it is impossible for the state/big bad central government to competently control it.

Governing is the same. No one person can possibly know all that is needed to know so you have to look to other qualities.

Now if you want to start restricting who gets to vote, I'm with you: "I'm disgusted by the whole process because I don't see a difference between either of them: Obama, McCain, Palin or Biden," Cordeiro said. "[Biden and Palin] are agreeing on so much. You take tax reform, for instance. What did they say that was different, really? They aren't speaking to me. There's all this talk about change, change, change. It's all gimmicks."
